Urgent repairs begin after road collapses near Mtkvari River

Repair works are underway after a section of road collapsed on the left bank of the Mtkvari River in Tbilisi.

Engineers have cordoned off approximately 50 meters of damaged roadway and pedestrian walkway near Restaurant Gagra, where cracks appeared several days ago. The adjacent riverbank retaining wall has also suffered significant deformation.

During a site visit on Thursday, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze told reporters: “We aim to complete roadway restoration by the end of May to restore normal traffic flow. However, the installation of the protective pile wall depends entirely on water levels.”

The damaged area has been secured and preliminary geological studies are in progress. According to experts from Georgia’s National Environment Agency, the collapse was likely caused by underground and surface water infiltration weakening the soil structure.

The 5 million lari (approximately £1.3 million) emergency repair project has been awarded to Black Sea Group and is being overseen by Tbilisi City Hall.
