The Russian Federation ceased to be a member of the Council of Europe after 26 years of membership.

Delegations of six countries from 46 member states voted against – Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia. They did not take part in the voting.

The decision to expel Russia from the CoE was made with 216 votes pro and 0 con.

Russia joined the Council of Europe on 28 February 1996.
