Support rally for Mzia Amaglobeli held in Batumi

A rally in support of Mzia Amaglobeli, founder of Batumelebi and Netgazeti media outlets, was held at Europe Square in Batumi.

Participants carried banners proclaiming “Freedom for Mzia Amaglobeli” and “Solidarity with Georgian Media,” among other messages.

The demonstration saw participation from journalists, students, civil activists, and representatives from various organizations.

“Our main message is clear: freedom for Mzia Amaglobeli and freedom for Georgian media. The laws enacted today are effectively dismantling independent media. Mzia’s case reflects the ongoing pressure on Georgian journalism. For over three months, a journalist who embodies the free press has been unjustly imprisoned,” stated Nana Kvachadze, editor of Batumelebi.

Protesters vowed to continue their demonstrations in various forms until Mzia Amaglobeli is released.

According to official records, Amaglobeli was detained under Article 173 for allegedly insulting police officers. The incident occurred on January 11 when she was initially held for one hour on administrative charges near the Adjara Police Department. Following her release, she was detained again, this time on criminal charges, for allegedly slapping Batumi Police Chief Irakli Dgebuadze. Mzia Amaglobeli maintained her innocence and protested by going on a hunger strike for 38 days.
