Protest erupts outside parliament amid Investigative Commission session

A protest rally is taking place on Rustaveli Avenue near the Georgian Parliament. Demonstrators accuse the Parliamentary Investigative Commission of putting the Georgian army on trial, calling it unacceptable.

“The trial of Georgian generals and the army is happening in the Kremlin’s branch. We cannot accept the prosecution of those who defended our independence in 2008—our statehood, language, homeland, and faith. Those sitting in the Kremlin’s branch belong not only here but also in prison. Soon, they will be held accountable for treason,” said one of the protesters.

As Goga Khaindrava left the Parliament building after his questioning, protesters greeted him with shouts.

For context, the Temporary Investigative Commission to Investigate the Activities of the Regime and Its Political Officials in 2003-2012 is holding a session in Parliament. The commission is chaired by Tea Tsulukiani, a member of Georgian Dream. Those questioned today included Mamuka Kurashvili, head of the Peacekeeping Operations Headquarters of the Joint Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces in 2008, and Goga Khaindrava, State Minister from 2004 to 2006. First Vice-Speaker of Parliament Gia Volski, who served as Deputy State Minister in 2004-2006, is also scheduled to testify.
