PM addresses Defence Forces: You have experienced war and know better than anyone value of peace; Experience, patriotism, professionalism, make you most reliable guarantors of Georgia's security
Based on a joint nomination by Irakli Kobakhidze, Prime Minister of Georgia and Speaker of the Parliament Shalva Papuashvili, President Mikheil Kavelashvili awarded state honors to representatives of the Georgian Defence Forces.
The PM congratulated the members of the Defence Forces on being awarded the Orders of Honor and Medals of Honor and thanked them for their contribution to strengthening Georgia’s defense capabilities.
“Today, we are joined by the commanders and leaders of our army-veterans of the 2008 war and fighters seasoned in international missions-who defended Georgia at the risk of their own lives and who now, from leadership positions, are building a modern Georgian army. It is important to note the fundamental results achieved under your leadership. The General Staff has introduced modern, NATO-compliant management doctrines and effective crisis management mechanisms. A historic reform of compulsory military service is being successfully implemented. New 6- and 8-month combat training programs are already a reality, creating a strong and professional reserve. A new, transparent and efficient recruitment and conscription system has been established, raising the prestige of military service among young people.
Today, our cadets receive education of European standards, while the Junior Officers School and reserve programs ensure the intellectual future of the armed forces. A completely new sergeant education system is operating in Georgia, directly strengthening the combat morale of every soldier. You have experienced war and know better than anyone the value of peace. This experience, together with patriotism and professionalism, makes you the strongest and most reliable guarantors of Georgia’s security. Building a modern and strong Georgian army ultimately means building peace. Your loyalty to the homeland and your dignified service are the best examples for every citizen. I thank you for your service, congratulate you on your well-deserved awards and wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. May 2026 be a year of victories, peace and progress for each of you and for all of Georgia,” stated the Prime Minister of Georgia.
The award ceremony was held at the Presidential Palace of Georgia. The award recipients were also congratulated by Speaker of Parliament Shalva Papuashvili, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Irakli Chikovani and Commander of the Georgian Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Giorgi Matiashvili. Following the ceremony, the President hosted a formal reception for the representatives of the Defence Forces.
