Parliament fails to hold vote to set up fact-finding commission

Georgian Parliament on Wednesday, for the second time, failed to hold a vote on setting up a fact-finding commission into the judicial system due to no quorum with only 52 lawmakers registered.

The ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party chair, Irakli Kobakhidze, explained that the parliamentary majority did not enlist, thus expressing solidarity with the Georgian judges.

On April 18, Irakli Kadagishvili, Chairman of the Procedural Affairs Committee, said he deemed the establishment of the fact-finding commission as a tool of “political meddling” in the court authority.

“The opposition will attempt to harm one of the EC’s 12 points referring to court. I am sure, due to the absence of facts, the commission will reveal the propaganda waged against the court for years,” he said.

The opposition demanded establishing the commission to probe into probable facts of corruption, nepotism, influence and pressure in the court system.
