Travelling from Tbilisi to Batumi will take 3 hours and 30 minutes following the opening of the Zestaphoni bypass highway, the Georgian government said.

A nine-kilometre-long Shorapani-Argveta section of the Zestaphoni bypass highway opened within the framework of the Rikoti Pass highway construction project. It will take six minutes to pass the bypass highway, which includes four tunnels and 11 bridges, increasing road safety standards and ensuring comfortable travel.

A passenger service centre, including fast food eateries, will be constructed along the way. Seventy per cent of the Rikoti Pass highway is complete by now.

The Asia Development Bank (ADB) financed the project with a total value of GEL 2.6 billion. The project is expected to complete at the end of 2024. The 52-kilometre-long Rikoti Pass highway includes 97 bridges and 51 tunnels. Seventy per cent of the Rikoti Pass highway is complete by now.
