Miners refrain from picketing after unofficial reports of demand satisfaction
Miners of Georgian Manganese have refrained from picketing the Chiatura local government building, citing unofficial information that the government may meet their demands. However, the protest continues.
The miners are demanding their salaries, an investigation into Georgian Manganese’s activities, the company’s withdrawal from Chiatura, and state control over mining operations.
Georgian Manganese suspended underground mining on March 1, citing unprofitability. This followed a six-month suspension starting November 1, during which employees were promised a 60% salary increase. However, miners claim they received the increased pay for only three months.
