Miners continued to protest in Chiatura for the sixteenth consecutive day, demanding their overdue wages and the transfer of the Georgian Manganese company to state control.
The miners presented their future action plans during today’s protest. The miners will begin picketing the Mayor’s Office on Monday peacefully disallowing employees to enter the municipality building.
They decided to block the building after they did not receive a responsive communication from the local government.
Chiatura locals expressed solidarity with protester miners and joined their march.
On March 8, the Chiatura Management Company, in agreement with Georgian Manganese Co., announced its decision to suspend underground mining operations in Chiatura.
According to the company, the internationally recognized German consulting firm DMT GmbH & Co. KG assessed the technical, geological, and financial conditions of the Chiatura mines and deemed the operations financially unviable.
