Tensions escalate in Chiatura as miner protest turns confrontational

In Chiatura, a confrontation erupted between representatives of the Korokhnali mine administration and protesting miners, preventing the management from entering the mine.

Police were deployed to the scene to manage the situation.

According to Chiatura Management Company LLC, their representatives had arrived at the mine for monitoring purposes.

The incident has now been resolved; however, the protest continues in the centre of Chiatura. Seven protesters are currently on a hunger strike, with one individual falling seriously ill and being transported to a clinic by ambulance.

Chiatura mines protesters demand payment of their overdue salaries, call for the departure of the investor, Georgian Manganese, from the city, and urge the government to take control of the mine’s management.
