Federalists' Chergoleishvili: UNM's actions are shameful, but not surprising

Tamar Chergoleishvili, leader of the Federalists, criticized the United National Movement, stating that its actions yesterday were shameful but not unexpected.

She accused the party of undermining any process that does not revolve around Mikheil Saakashvili [Georgia’s jailed ex-president] for the past 13 years.

Chergoleishvili highlighted that Salome Zourabichvili’s initiative introduces a new approach by attempting to break the cycle of political deadlock and foster agreements.

“There is a well-known fable about a swan, a pike, and a crawfish which teaches that progress is only possible when moving in the same direction. Until now, the political spectrum has been trapped in a cycle of futile negotiations.

Although some may view Zourabichvili’s initiative as lacking ambition, it is, in fact, the only viable and correct path,” she said.

Chergoleishvili asserted that the United National Movement’s protest stems from the fact that this initiative prioritizes public interests over Saakashvili.

“Because the protest and the people’s concerns are at the centre, Saakashvili is attempting to discredit the process. Salome Zourabichvili merely announced what had already been agreed upon. The UNM’s misleading statements created unrealistic expectations, but I have no criticism for Zourabichvili,” she added.

When asked about the United National Movement’s involvement in the coordination process, Chergoleishvili dismissed the idea: “If you oppose and attack this process, how can you be part of it? I do not see a place for them here.”

At yesterday’s rally, former President Salome Zourabichvili proposed the creation of a resistance platform.
