EU Integration Committee Chair: EC conclusions contained political assessments again
“There were again political assessments in the conclusions of the European Council, which we heard on December 16. Our approach is to return to healthy relations, but based on mutual respect,” stated Levan Makashvili, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on European Integration, commenting on the summary document of the European Council after the first day of the leaders’ summit.
“We did not expect any additional decisions from the European Council beyond what was discussed at the Foreign Ministers’ Council on December 16. There was no mention of sanctions, including those related to diplomatic passports; however, the Foreign Ministers’ Council instructed the European Commission to examine the issue. It remains to be seen what developments will follow and what legal basis the European Commission will provide.
The matter still needs to be addressed in the ministers’ council. This is a long-term bureaucratic process. It is impossible to determine what results will emerge from this.
There were again political assessments in the conclusions of the European Council, which we heard on December 16. Our approach is to return to normal, healthy relations, but based on mutual respect,” Makashvili concluded.
