Eka Beselia: My resignation suspended unreasonable process of appointment of Supreme Court judges

By the decision on my resignation, we have suspended the process, which, I believe, was very harmful and concerned the hasty and unjustified process of the appointment of Supreme Court judges for lifetime tenure, – Eka Beselia, the Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Issues made this statement at the briefing held today.

Eka Beselia explained the reasons for her resignation from the post of Chair of Legal Committee.

“Upon reflection, I made a decision to resign as the Chair of Committee on Legal Issues. By this decision, we have suspended the process, which, I believe, was very harmful and concerned the hasty and unjustified process of appointment of Supreme Court judges for lifetime tenure. I took this decision in order to give society the opportunity to observe a transparent process and be involved in the selection of judges, the selection of people with a high reputation. This process must be in compliance with criteria”, – said Eka Beselia.

As Beselia noted, a working group should be established, the Parliament and the Committee should work in full compliance with the procedures that make the process transparent, fair and correct.

In addition, she believes that the list of candidates for Supreme Court judges must be recalled, and not suspended.
