Cardiovascular disease, cancer lead causes of death in Georgia in 2024, GeoStat says
Cardiovascular diseases and cancer were the leading causes of death in Georgia in 2024, according to official statistics released today.
The National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat) reported that 43,971 people died in Georgia last year – an increase of 1,215 deaths, or 2.8%, compared to 2023.
Cardiovascular diseases accounted for 41.3% of all deaths, while cancer was responsible for 13.0% of fatalities, making them the two dominant causes of mortality in the country.
The statistics reveal significant variations in causes of death across different age groups. Among children under five, disorders arising during the perinatal period were the primary cause of death.
For those aged 5-39, external causes including injuries, poisoning and accidents were the leading killers, reflecting the higher probability of accidents in this age group.
However, among the population aged 40 and over, cardiovascular diseases and cancer dominated as the main causes of death in 2024.
