MFA: During meeting with EC delegation Georgian side reconfirmed readiness to continue constructive cooperation with EU based on mutual respect
A meeting between the Georgian and European Commission delegations was held on June 11 in Brussels within visa regulation dialogue; In particular, the meeting touched on the EC’s Implementing Regulation of 6 March 2026 temporarily suspending visa-free travel for holders of diplomatic, service and official passports of Georgia, the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said.
According to the MFA, the EC’s decision is based on the report, which unfairly assesses the situation in Georgia and leaves no opportunity to make objective conclusions. The Ministry assesses the suspension of visa-free travel for Georgian citizens holding diplomatic, service and official passports as “unfair.”
“Despite this, within the visa dialogue format, the reasons given by the EU side for the implementation of the visa suspension mechanism, the recommendations presented by the European Commission, and the measures taken or ongoing by Georgia to implement them were reviewed.
It was emphasized that the Constitution of Georgia and the acting legislation guarantee basic rights and liberties including freedom of expression, assembly and manifestation, union of citizens, protection of private life and equality.
The Georgian side noted that the country has effective national mechanisms for the protection of human rights and that the strengthening of relevant institutions continues.
Also, the protest rallies regularly organized by political parties and civil activists over a long period of time confirm that the right to peaceful assembly and demonstration in the country is ensured.
The Georgian delegation explained that despite 2024 violent rallies and attacks on state institutions or law enforcers, investigations are ongoing to reveal facts of exceeding and misuse of official duties on the part of public officials and law enforcers. The delegation stated that five individuals are detained and criminal proceedings are launched against them on charges of exceeding duties and obstructing journalistic activities by the police during the dispersal of the 2024 violent protest.
The Georgian side underlined that the demand to repeal the laws passed by the elected legislative body when they are approved in the public and national interests and do not contradict any international convention or agreement to which Georgia is a member,” the Ministry said.
The MFA further informed that the Constitution and legislation of Georgia have created effective mechanisms to combat discrimination.
“Within the meeting, the Georgian delegation reviewed Georgia’s progress in migration management, prevention of illegal migration, and readmission, noting that Georgia actively cooperates with EU member states and relevant agencies.
The fight against corruption, the creation of an asset recovery department, the development of a new anti-corruption strategy, and the strengthening of the institutional capacity of the State Audit Office were highlighted.
The delegation reconfirmed that the Georgian government continues to work on practical issues to ensure the sustainability of the visa liberalization process with the European Union. The delegation emphasized that political manipulation with the issue is unaccaptable. The Georgian side reconfirmed readiness to continue constructive cooperation with the European Union based on mutual respect, equality and common interests, underscoring the significance of high-level political dialogue,” the MFA said.
