Azerbaijani journalist Afgan Mukhtarli has been released from prison in Azerbaijan. The journalist’s brother, Ramazan Mukhtarli wrote about it on his Facebook page on Tuesday.

According to him, after release Afgan Mukhtarly was taken directly to the airport, from where the journalist departed for Germany.

Based on Azerbaijani media, part of the prison sentence of Mukhtarli was replaced by a suspended sentence.

Azerbaijani journalist Afgan Mukhtarli went missing from Tbilisi on May 29, 2017 and was arrested in Baku a day later on charges of illegal border crossing, smuggling money and police disobedience. He told the lawyer that he had been taken from Tbilisi to Azerbaijan by force. On January 12, 2018, the journalist was sentenced by a court of Azerbaijan to 6 years in prison. Mukhtarli does not plead guilty in any of the charges presented against him and considers the case politically motivated.
