PM: Strategic agreements reached with Azerbaijan on power transit and oil pipeline operations

The Georgian Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, said that Georgia has signed important agreements in the energy sector during his visit to Baku, covering both electricity imports and transit, as well as cooperation on a key oil infrastructure project.

Speaking to Georgian journalists, Kobakhidze noted that the agreements include arrangements in the electricity sector and a deal related to the Baku–Tbilisi–Supsa pipeline.

“A very important agreement has been signed in the field of electricity, covering both import and transit. Another significant agreement was also reached in relation to the Baku–Tbilisi–Supsa pipeline. The pipeline has been inactive for the past three years, during which it generated no revenue for the country and remained out of operation.

Under the new agreement, together with the Azerbaijani side, the commissioning and effective operation of the pipeline will be ensured. The pipeline remains the property of Georgia, as it has been throughout, but its proper functioning will be secured through this cooperation. As a result, the country is expected to receive tens of millions of dollars in annual revenue. For the past three years, income from the pipeline was zero due to its suspension, and this new agreement is aimed at restoring its full operational capacity,” he stated.
