EU Ambassador to Georgia: Agreement possible if all sides demonstrate sincere willingness

A personal envoy of the European Council President Charles Michel, Christian Danielsson, will be coming to Georgia to see whether there is an opportunity to find a common landing zone between the sides, the EU Ambassador to Georgia, Carl Hartzell, told journalists in Khashuri.

The EU Ambassador believes it is the sit-up moment for formal political leaders.

“A few days ago, President Michel announced following the first round of mediation talks carried out by his envoy Danielsson that he would like his envoy to come down again. And this will happen rather soon. We are in the preparatory stages of his arrival.

There is no secret that the first round of mediation was disappointing in the sense that he did not reach the agreement that we in Europe find so important for Georgia to be able to move forward. This is the moment of truth. Danielsson will be coming here to see still whether there is an opportunity to find a common landing zone between the sides.

Now is the time to think long and hard about the starting positions from all sides with the view to see whether it is possible to be part of a broader agreement. I would say it is not going to be easy. But this is the mission. It is the sit-up moment for political leadership. I think there is a real possibility in case there is a sincere willingness from all sides to take the next necessary steps to move towards a landing zone acceptable to everyone,” Carl Hartzell declared.
