UNM Tsiskarishvili: By adopting MEGOBARI Act, U.S. reaffirms support for Georgian people

“By adopting the MEGOBARI Act, the United States clearly demonstrates its support for the Georgian people. This initiative offers Georgia a significant opportunity to strengthen both strategic partnerships and economic ties, opening promising prospects for every citizen,” said Petre Tsiskarishvili, Secretary General of the opposition United National Movement party.

According to Tsiskarishvili, the MEGOBARI Act reflects the U.S. position on Georgia in a broader geopolitical context.

“The MEGOBARI Act is a clear expression of the U.S. stance toward Georgia, especially in terms of regional and geopolitical dynamics. It supports our country’s democratic development, institutional consolidation, and deeper integration with the Western world. Georgia now has a real opportunity for closer strategic and economic cooperation with the U.S.

However, if the Georgian Dream government continues on its current path, its leaders, MPs, and even their family members could face broad sanctions. Ultimately, the choice belongs to the Georgian people – do we pursue a future of strategic ties with the West, economic growth, and the possibility of visa-free travel to the U.S., or remain under a regime that governs without a true democratic mandate,” Tsiskarishvili stated.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee supported the Mobilizing and Enhancing Georgia’s Options for Building Accountability, Resilience, and Independence Act (MEGOBARI Act) on March 27.

The document provides for sanctions and visa restrictions against high-ranking Georgian officials. Specifically, it includes the following provisions: to initiate a complete review of U.S.-Georgia relations, including all assistance programs; to recognize the Georgian people’s support for the commitment to Euro-Atlantic integration processes enshrined in the country’s constitution; requires the U.S. President to impose sanctions on the Georgian Dream officials and their facilitators who were involved in corruption to divert Georgia from the path of Euro-Atlantic integration, undermined Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, or were involved in other corrupt acts that harm Georgia’s stability; will strengthen people-to-people connections and defense cooperation when Georgia once again acts according to its own constitutional requirements; expresses support for Georgia’s full sovereignty and territorial integrity under the conditions of Russia’s illegal occupation; will support civil society that protects the Georgian people and the Constitution of Georgia from the abuse of power by the Georgian Dream government.
