FM: U.S. unlikely to be interested in making MEGOBARI Act foundation of Georgia-U.S. relations, so it is no longer under consideration

“If we observe the developments surrounding the MEGOBARI Act, it’s reasonable to conclude that no one involved is interested in establishing Georgia-U.S. relations based on documents of that kind,” Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili stated on Imedi TV.

Botchorishvili discussed the current state of relations with the United States.

“Work continues at the operational level, although the political sphere remains empty. We are receiving messages from the United States, and we expect a certain framework to be defined for our relations. However, the unfolding events within the American legislative body, particularly the developments concerning the MEGOBARI Act, suggest that no one there is in favour of Georgia deviating from this trajectory or establishing Georgia-U.S. relations based on documents similar to the MEGOBARI Act,” the minister stated.

Maka Botchorishvili also addressed the actions of individual politicians, describing them as hostile towards their own country.

“We can assess the behaviour of Georgian citizens and politicians. Asking to record what is written in the MEGOBARI Act, which is essentially against Georgia, is, in my view, an act of hostility towards one’s own nation. This isn’t just about the government; it’s a form of hostility, akin to paying money to harm one’s own country.”

We have expressed our hopes, our interests, and our proposals publicly. We seek a strategic and substantive partnership with the United States. To achieve this, dialogue between both parties is essential,” Botchorishvili emphasised.
