Renowned Georgian mountaineer Shota Mirianashvili passes away

Renowned Georgian mountaineer and President of the Georgian Mountaineering Federation, Shota Mirianashvili, has passed away. Giorgi Nikoladze Mountaineering Club of Tbilisi State University announced the news.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Mirianashvili served as captain and coach of the Georgian national mountaineering team. He completed numerous ascents throughout his career, including pioneering first ascents in the Caucasus, Pamir, and Tian Shan mountain ranges.

Mirianashvili held the titles of Master of Sport of International Class and Honoured Coach of Georgia. Over the course of his career, he led more than a hundred mass mountaineering expeditions (alpiniadas) and athletic qualification camps.

For many years, Mirianashvili headed the Giorgi Nikoladze Mountaineering Club at Tbilisi State University.

According to the club, memorial services will take place on 1 and 2 September at the Vake Trinity Church. Shota Mirianashvili will be laid to rest on 3 September.
