The United National Movement (UNM) opposition party rebuffs to sign renewed EU-backed compromise paper.

Party member Akaki Minashvili believes only early elections and the release of the political prisoners could ease the current crises.

Minashvili says the political prisoners’ issue is vague in a renewed paper, including the issues of bail and amnesty.

“The amnesty seems broad that implies people, public officials who resorted to the excessive force against citizens rallied over Russian occupation. Another weak point is that the CEC chairman will hold the post for two more years and the Prosecutor General for five years. The paper does not contain the issue of the new judges. Judicial reform is impossible without independent judges. Besides, linking local election results to early elections is wrong which will deepen crises and trigger more polarization, thus, we reject to sign it,” Minashvili said.

The ruling Georgian Dream party publicly signed the compromise solution prepared by the European Council President Charles Michel’s personal envoy Christian Danielsson, but the opposition parties refused to do so.

President of the European Council Charles Michel published a new proposal on Sunday.

For the record, Georgian opposition parties that won seats in the Georgian Parliament of the 10th Convocation believe the 2020 parliamentary elections were a fraud. They have been demanding repeat parliamentary elections and the release of the United National Movement Chair, Nika Melia, and the co-founder of the TV channel Mtavari Arkhi Giorgi Rurua.

The second EU-mediated attempt to solve political crises in Georgia failed. EU mediator Christian Danielsson proposed a solution to political actors on March 31.
