Speaker claims patriotic gov't in 2008 could have averted war; Saakashvili's regime used Georgia as pawn
“Plans existed from the 1990s onwards. The question is not who started what, but why this war began. Had we had a patriotic government, this war would not have started, just as it did not start in 2022,” declared Shalva Papuashvili, Speaker of Georgia’s Parliament.
According to him, had there been a patriotic government in 2008 rather than a puppet that allowed others to use the country as a pawn, there would have been no war.
“Many have vested interests in global confrontation, and we see this reflected in Ukraine’s example. Even today, there is loud rhetoric claiming that Ukraine is Europe’s frontline. But how many European soldiers have you actually seen on that front line? If this truly is the European Union’s battleground against Russia, why are Lithuanian, Estonian, or French soldiers not present there? Mikheil Saakashvili led a puppet regime that, in a significant geopolitical contest where many have interests, let Georgia be used as a pawn.
What can I say about such a commander-in-chief who, when he had a French guest here and saw an aircraft, threw himself to the ground and abandoned that man? They avoid the question of why the war started and instead shift the focus to dates. The question is simple: why did the war begin? Regarding Georgian hero warriors and civilians who sacrificed themselves in this war, every Georgian fighter fights like at Didgori, unafraid of numbers or circumstances, and indifferent to the political context. This is a fight for your homeland; every soldier enters battle for his own country, just as at Didgori,” stated Papuashvili.
