Parliament Speaker: We have enemies of Georgia's development within Europe; Brussels must end its hostile policy against Georgian people

“The hostile policy being pursued against the Georgian people must be brought to an end. It is Brussels, above all, that must cease this hostile policy,” declared the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili, in response to a journalist’s question.

A journalist put the following question to Papuashvili: “Next week, yet another resolution is to be considered in the Council of Europe and the European Parliament. One of its authors is Rasa Juknevičienė. It concerns the functioning of democratic institutions in Georgia. We have seen similar resolutions before; what value do you place on them?”

“None whatsoever. They serve only to generate media noise. Regrettably, we have enemies of this country’s development within Europe; people who quite openly wish to cause harm to our nation. This hostile policy must therefore be brought to an end, and it is Brussels that must do so first. It lies within Brussels’ power to cease the hostile policy being waged against Georgia. When Brussels takes hostile steps against a candidate country, this is wholly incompatible with the obligations that the European capital itself has assumed towards the Georgian people by virtue of the Association Agreement we hold. To pursue a hostile policy within the framework of an Association Agreement is, in itself, a violation of that very agreement and a show of disrespect for Georgia’s status as a candidate country. It is therefore imperative that this hostile policy against the Georgian people be brought to an end,” said Papuashvili.
