Senator Durbin remarks on draft law on foreign agents

U.S. Senators Richard Durbin, on Monday, remarked on draft law on foreign agents, tabled by People’s Power movement.

In a joint press point with Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Durbin said: “In the United States, we have a law as well for disclosure.”

“But we do not want to see Georgia move in the direction that some other countries like Russia and Venezuela, and others have moved to inhibit or to discourage this type of organization from existing. A democracy should be strong enough to have this kind of an element in it as long as there is an honest disclosure,” he noted.

Asked about Saakashvili’s health state, Durbin noted that “we should urge the government of Georgia to be humane in their treatment of him and all prisoners and to give him proper medical attention so to avoid anything worse.”

“I have known him for 20 years. I have met with him when he was president, and he has visited me frequently in Washington DC; So, I know him personally and I’m following this case as best I can. I know nothing about the legal charges that were made against him, and I don’t profess to be an expert on medical care. We have reports that his physical situation is deteriorating, and I believe that my feelings are that we should urge the government of Georgia to be humane in their treatment of him and all prisoners and to give him proper medical attention so to avoid anything worse,” he stated.
