If my decision on pardoning is perceived as insulting the police, I promise not to allow the attitude of the head of state towards the police to be called into question, – the President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili has released a statement.

According to the President, the pardoning act, which was adopted completely sincerely and under her responsibility, caused great public interest.

“In order to prevent such a sad mismatch in future, I take a principal initiative to speed up the process launched in my administration and together with the legislative body and relevant agencies,  improve the right to grant pardon so that the humane exception to be maintained and the risks minimized.

I reiterate that the police are one of the main pillars of the state, and the stability and security stand on the dedication and devotion of our police officers. If my decision on pardoning is perceived as insulting the police, I promise not to allow the attitude of the head of state towards the police to be called into question” – President notes in her statement.

Georgia’s President Salome Zurabishvili pardoned 34 inmates,  including prisoner convicted for murdering a police officer, in connection with Virgin May Day celebrated on August 28 in Georgia.
