Rugby Europe announces immediate suspension of all matches amid COVID-19 concerns
“Following the recent evolution of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) throughout Europe, Rugby Europe has announced a suspension of all its matches and tournaments, from Friday, March 13th 2020 until April 15th, 2020,” Rugby Europe announced today.
The following matches and tournaments are now postponed:
- XV Senior Men and Women International Championships games, including the last Round of Rugby Europe Championship, planned this weekend, a total of 12 games;
- XV U20 European Championship in Coimbra, Portugal from March 22nd to 28th;
- XV U18 European Championship in Kaliningrad, Russia from April 12th to 18th;
- XV U18 Development games in Serbia and the Czech Republic;
Rugby Europe says it will continue to monitor developments with unions, local governments and health authorities and will respect the instructions received in the interests of overall public health in relation to COVID-19. No immediate announcement will be made on rescheduling.
“In this exceptional global pandemic, we must consider that the priority is to protect the health and safety of players, coaches, officials and fans. We hope this period will be enough to get things back in order. If not, we will not hesitate to extend the suspension of our activities,” Octavian Morariu, President of Rugby Europe said.
