Public Defender: Batumi tragedy indicates state obligation to ensure security of public spaces

Georgia’s Public Defender Levan Ioseliani has expressed ‘profound sorrow and sympathy’ over the tragic deaths of two minors in Batumi.

The Public Defender called on the relevant authorities to ensure a swift and objective investigation to identify responsible persons and hold them accountable.

“We extend our condolences to the family, loved ones, and all of Georgia. Creating a safe environment for people’s lives and health is the state’s primary obligation. And protecting children’s lives and well-being should be the state’s main priority.

This tragedy once again points to the state’s obligation to approach urban planning responsibly, ensure the safety of public spaces, and maintain constant monitoring to prevent similar tragic incidents,” reads the statement.
