GD says public defender's selection may fail if opposition does not revise its approach

We proposed five candidates for the job of Public Defender, and the opposition rejected all of them, said Mamuka Mdinaradze, chair of the Georgian Dream faction, following the meeting between the ruling Georgian Dream and the opposition.

According to him, there is a theoretical possibility that the opposition would reconsider the events, argue for the state’s interest in implementing the European proposals, and then return with a revised position.

If this does not happen, the process may collapse, prompting the need for new processes, the GD MP stated.

“We offered them the option of selecting one of the five candidates as a compromise. However, they have said unequivocally that they would support no one other than the two candidates they have nominated. Aside from other concerns, political impartiality is a crucial aspect for us,” Mdinaradze said.

On Monday, the ruling Georgian Dream party and the opposition convened the third round of political negotiations around the Public Defender’s candidacy.
