Peter Stano: EU accession decisions require unanimity among member states

“Any decision when it comes to the accession process is made by the member states in unanimity,” said Peter Stano, the spokesperson of the European Commission and representative of the European Union’s Foreign Policy Department.

Stano responded to a question about the appeal of 31 MEPs to EU High Representative Joseph Borrell to suspend Georgia’s candidate status. He was asked about the technical process of suspending a candidate’s status and who is authorized to make such a decision.

“First of all, as a general rule, we do not comment on the letters received from other partners, on the side of the European Commission or High Representative. when it comes to the procedures, any decision when it comes to the accession process is made by the member states in unanimity. In other words, the EU when it comes to the accession part of individual candidate countries, decide every next step in this process by unanimity. This is something that happened based on the recommendation from the European Commission. Then based on the discussions and the decisions that the member states make in unanimity”, said Peter Stano.
