EEAS Spokesperson: Georgia infringed two of 12 priorities by advancing 'foreign influence' draft law

Peter Stano, Lead Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, on Monday, explained why the European Union reacted to People’s Power-tabled draft laws on Transparency of Foreign Influence.

In his EC Midday press briefing, Stano went on to say that “there was a simple reason because Georgia is the country that showed an interest and applied to join the EU and the EU responded in acknowledging the application and defining 12 priorities which Georgia has to fulfil in order to be in discussions and considerations for the candidate status of the European Union.”

Stano added that by advancing this law, “Georgia managed to infringe on two of these priorities. I think that is quite obvious why the EU has reacted.”

For the record, after a two-day protest, the Georgian Parliament has withdrawn the bill.
