Georgian parliament backed and ratified the UN Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities with 82 votes pro on Friday.

According to the Ministry of IDPs from Occupied Territories, Labor, Health and Social Affairs, ratification of the UN Optional Protocol will contribute to the realization of the rights of persons with disabilities.

The UN Protocol allows consideration of individual appeals and provision of recommendations. “Those persons, who failed to protect their rights in Georgia, will be able to restore them on the international level at the UN Committee for Persons with Disabilities,” said Tamar Barkalaia, Deputy Health Minister.

Parliament Speaker Archil Talakvadze welcomed the ratification of the UN Optional Protocol. “This is a decision of historical importance. I hope it will improve the lives of many people with special needs,” Parliament Speaker said.

The parliament joined and ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2009 but did not ratify the Protocol.
