Patriarchate to mediate between government and protesters over Namakhvani HPP
The Georgian Patriarchate said it would mediate between the Georgian government and protesters over the disputed Namakhvani HPP project in the Rioni Gorge.
“We work with both sides to evade radicalization and to leave space for a dialogue,” said Andria Jaghmaidze, Head of the Patriarchate’s press service.
According to Jaghmaidze, the contract conditions are not clear for the majority of the local population that causes tension. The viewpoints are highly polarized.
According to the statement released by the Patriarchate, the Patriarchate has no group of geologists or economists. However, it can call both sides for peace and common sense.
Rioni Gorge residents protest the construction of Namakhvani HPP by Turkish company ENKA. Anti-HPP activists are concerned about the HPP construction could harm the environment.
