Parliament Speaker announces plans to challenge UNM in Constitutional Court

“We witnessed considerable hysteria from the defenders of the United National Movement (UNM). However, the events of October 4 provided us with a wealth of evidence that we are prepared to present to the Constitutional Court,” Shalva Papuashvili, Chair of the Parliament of Georgia, stated that a lawsuit will soon be filed with the Constitutional Court to have the United National Movement declared unconstitutional.

Papuashvili explained that the failed coup attempt on October 4 has become yet another piece of evidence illustrating that the United National Movement is an extremist party actively undermining Georgian democracy and statehood through anti-constitutional actions.

“Of course, our perspective on the October 4 incident is not solely about restoring law and order. We are analysing all aspects of the situation, because it has become clear that the United National Movement is an extremist organisation threatening our democratic foundations.

Foreign observers have recognised that additional evidence has emerged. They see that those involved are complicit in the attempted coup, and many are now remaining silent in an effort to shield the United National Movement. Yet, the evidence has only grown stronger since October 4,” he added.

“We will proceed with filing a lawsuit with the Constitutional Court soon, armed with compelling arguments to demand that the United National Movement and affiliated groups be declared unconstitutional,” Papuashvili concluded.
