Parliament aims to uncover processes behind sharp price increase, identify options for optimisation

A temporary parliamentary commission dedicated to examining price dynamics is set to commence its activities this week. MP Shota Berekashvili, Chairman of the Parliamentary Sectoral Committee, who will also serve as the head of the commission, reported on Monday.

The inaugural session is scheduled for February 5.

The commission will comprise 14 members of the parliament, evenly representing the majority and opposition, with seven members from each side.

According to MP Berekashvili, the primary objective of the commission is to investigate the pricing of essential consumer goods, including food, medicines, and fuel.

He further explained that the commission will hold meetings with leading companies in the sector, manufacturers, importers, distributors, and retail operators.

“We aim to thoroughly examine the underlying business processes. As you may be aware, research indicates that prices for essential consumer goods and food in Georgia are significantly higher than in comparable countries. We want to understand what drives these steep price increases. The causes could include elevated operating costs, high capital expenses, or disproportionately high profit margins. There are specific mechanisms, if utilised correctly, that can optimise these processes.

Additionally, enhancing competition could influence price stability and foster a more dynamic market. Ultimately, proper implementation of these measures should lead to more efficient business operations, which in turn could help reduce prices for essential goods.

The same approach applies to medicines. We will explore the factors behind price rises and, with careful analysis and collaboration with businesses and experts, aim to bring prices down. The process will be transparent and inclusive. Our goal is to support businesses in making their operations more cost-effective and transparent, thereby creating a more competitive market that benefits consumers,” Berekashvili stated.
