GD’s Matikashvili: Opposition cannot put up with fact that individuals who participated in violent protests admit their guilt

“The president exercised his discretionary authority and pardoned many convicts, including those who had participated in violent protests,” said Davit Matikashvili, a member of the Georgian Dream (GD) party.

Matikashvili explained that the President pardoned those who admitted their guilt.

“The president exercised his discretionary authority and pardoned many convicts, including those who had participated in violent protests. However, he granted clemency to those individuals who sincerely expressed remorse and admitted their guilt. Naturally, the President exercised his constitutional right within the scope of his discretion, and these individuals are now back with their families,” he said.

According to the GD member, the agent opposition cannot put up with the fact that individuals who participated in violent protests admit their guilt.

“As for statements of radicals, agent opposition, naturally, for them, positive fact represents skewing their own agenda. They cannot put up with the fact that individuals who participated in violent protests admit their guilt and that the state responds adequately,” Matikashvili said.

Among the prisoners pardoned by Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili on the occasion of the Mariamoba holiday are individuals who were detained during various protest rallies.

Kavelashvili pardoned 226 people in total on the occasion of Mariamoba. According to the President’s Administration, the pardon applies to 217 people serving prison sentences and six people serving non-custodial sentences, while three individuals had their criminal convictions expunged.
