Opposition parties urge OSCE to activate 'Moscow mechanism' in response to electoral violations
Four opposition parties in Georgia have collectively appealed to the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR) to activate the ‘Moscow Mechanism.’ This request seeks the dispatch of a special mission to investigate allegations of electoral violations and political violence within the country.
At a recent briefing, representatives from Unity – National Movement, Coalition for Change, Gakharia for Georgia, and Strong Georgia, including Gia Baramidze, Giorgi Butikashvili, Teona Akubardia, and Levan Samushia, announced their united initiative.
“As the pro-European coalition, we are dedicated to reinstating Georgia’s European trajectory by appealing for assistance from international institutions. The Moscow Mechanism, established in 1991, would facilitate an impartial investigation into electoral misconduct and politically motivated violence. This is a critical step toward ensuring free and fair elections,” Giorgi Butikashvili stressed the significance of international involvement.
He further emphasized the need for the mission to investigate violent acts that echo the oppressive tactics employed by the Russian regime against its own citizens.
Support for the letter comes from a report by the Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association (GYLA), which documents the violence and terrorism allegedly orchestrated by Bidzina Ivanishvili, highlighting his antagonism toward the Georgian populace.
The opposition leaders noted that their collaborative efforts have previously led to international sanctions against what they describe as a repressive regime in Georgia. The letter, along with supporting evidence, is expected to be submitted to the OSCE/ODIHR soon.
