Opposition MP hopes Georgia to have relations with other countries aligned with EU foreign policy

“The European Union and free world have questions about Viktor Orban’s domestic and foreign policy. His policy is not aligned with the EU, especially regarding anti-Ukrainian sentiments that Orban used in his election campaign,” said opposition MP Khatia Dekanoidze, remarking on the Hungarian PM’s Georgian visit.

Khatia Dekanoidze hopes Georgia will establish and keep close relations with other countries aligned with EU foreign policy.

“When our government is trying to isolate itself, Orbán’s government is also practically isolated. Such a distinguished relationship with him generates doubts and indicates that European integration is not a priority for the Georgian government. Their primary goal is to maintain power,” she said.

Dekanoidze believes that the “textbook” of the Georgian Dream party is similar to Orban’s pre-election platform and propaganda. According to Dekanoidze, the ruling party should not forget that it needs the consensus of 27 EU member states.

“The EU leaders tend to lean towards a geopolitical consensus. However, the Georgian Dream may further worsen the relations that will reflect the decision on candidate status. As a Georgian citizen and MP, I share the opinion that Georgia should receive candidate status even with conditions and with the merit of the Georgian people. However, to get the status, it is important to keep in line with the EU course and fulfil the conditions. It is also significant to stop anti-Western propaganda,” she said.
