OIV Dir/Gen names Georgia as one of world’s most significant centers of grapevine genetic diversity

As part of his visit to Georgia, John Barker, Director General of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), visited the Jighaura Experimental Base of the Agricultural Research Centre, Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture reported.

He was hosted by Levan Ujmajuridze, Director of the Agricultural Research Centre, who introduced him to the ongoing work on preserving the genetic resources of Georgian grapevines and advancing viticulture and winemaking.

“We discussed in detail the Centre’s efforts to protect plant genetic resources and promote Georgian vines. This meeting marks another important step toward future cooperation,” said Ujmajuridze.

During his visit, John Barker toured the vine collection at the Jighaura base, explored restored Georgian grape varieties, and tasted wines made from rare local grapes.

“Georgia is one of the world’s most significant centres of grapevine genetic diversity. This heritage is unique globally. I’m pleased to see it not only well-preserved but actively developing. The Centre’s work in studying, restoring, and conserving grapevine varieties is vital for both Georgia and international viticulture,” Barker noted.

The meeting also addressed opportunities to increase global awareness of Georgian vines and wine and to strengthen scientific collaboration.
