Observer Jay Patel reports smooth progress in elections, no violations yet
“So far, I’ve not seen any incidents of violence or violations of any kind. It seems fairly smooth; the process seems to be aligned with most other countries,” stated Jay Patel, an observer for the Centre for Fundamental Rights, speaking to journalists in Khashuri.
He noted that there is a clear public interest in the elections, evidenced by the high voter turnout.
“We’ve been looking at different polling stations across the country in Tbilisi and now here. So far, I’ve not seen any incidents of violence or violations of any kind. It seems fairly smooth; the process seems to be aligned with most other countries. I’ve noticed a lot of voters turning out to vote in these elections, which suggests a genuine public interest in these elections and clearly recognizes the importance of making sure they have the right local representatives.
The electronic system can make things easier. It can mean that you get the results much faster than you would normally. But at the same time, there are differences in scrutiny compared to the paper system. So, there’s a debate back and forth about which system to use,” explained Jay Patel.
