NBG President: Commercial banks obliged to comply with Constitution, legislation

“Operating commercial banks are obliged to act in compliance with the norms defined by the Constitution and legislation,” said Natia Turnava, President of the National Bank of Georgia (NBG), responding to the question on the UK’s sanctioning of Imedi TV and POSTV.

According to Natia Turnava, commercial banks operating in the country are legal entities established under Georgian legislation, whose activities are subject to the Constitution of Georgia and national legislation.

“If a conflict arises between a normative act adopted in another jurisdiction and the Constitution and legislation of Georgia, commercial banks are obliged to act in compliance with the norms defined by the Constitution and legislation,” she said.

On February 24, the UK Government sanctioned two Georgian TV stations, Imedi TV and POSTV, for their involvement in “spreading Russian disinformation.”
