Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemns holding of presidential elections of Russia on the occupied territories of Georgia
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemns the conduct of presidential elections of the Russian Federation, in the occupied territories of Georgia, where 33 polling stations have been illegally opened – the statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia reads.
According to statement, this is another clear example of occupation of the Abkhazian and Tskhinvali regions of Georgia and another illegal step towards annexation.
“The parliamentary and presidential elections are underway in the occupied territories under the conditions when the remaining populations of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region have been victims of Moscow’s illegal and compulsory passportization since the early 2000s, while thousands of internally displaced persons and refugees are still deprived of the right to return to their homes.
By such actions, the Russian Federation fully ignores the UN Charter, the Helsinki Final Act and grossly violates the fundamental norms and principles of international law, such as: sovereignty, territorial integrity, inviolability of internationally recognized borders and non-interference in internal affairs.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on the international community to assess the illegal actions of Russia in the occupied regions of Georgia that undermine the international order based on justice and rules”, – the statement reads.
