Mayor Kaladze: Tbilisi builds sports facilities, restores public spaces
The Georgian Football Federation has opened a new football center, Avaza, in the Digomi district in Tbilisi.
The opening ceremony was attended by Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, President of Georgia Mikheil Kavelashvili, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, Minister of Sports Shalva Gogoladze, and President of the Georgian Football Federation Levan Kobiashvili. Also present were national team coach Willy Sagnol, representatives of FIFA and UEFA, and veteran Georgian footballers.
In his address, Mayor Kaladze thanked the central government, the Prime Minister, and the leadership of the Football Federation for their support. He highlighted the importance of the new project, noting that “the city is not only building new sports facilities but also reclaiming and restoring recreational areas that once belonged to the public.”
“Several years ago, we promised that this would be one of the best sports complexes, and today we are delivering on that promise. This field will help nurture future stars like Levan Kobiashvili, Giorgi Kinkladze, the Arveladze brothers, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and many others. Working together with the Football Federation, and with support from FIFA and UEFA, we are creating the infrastructure necessary for the development of Georgian sports. Believe me, many more such projects will be implemented in the coming years,” Kaladze said.
According to Tbilisi City Hall, the land on which the center was built had previously been in private ownership. It was returned to the municipality and transferred to the Football Federation in 2022 with the obligation to arrange football infrastructure. The complex now includes standard and mini fields with stands and lighting, as well as an administrative building with changing rooms.
The new facilities will be available free of charge for local children’s football schools and girls’ teams.
The project was financed by the Georgian Football Federation with the support of FIFA’s FORWARD program and UEFA’s Hattrick program.
