Lelo's Kupradze: 24 states interested in human rights situation in Georgia; we were initiators

“Twenty-four states are interested in the human rights situation in Georgia, and we were the initiators of this, together with other colleagues,” stated Irakli Kupradze, a member of the Lelo-Strong Georgia party.

According to him, he is confident that this format will work successfully for the benefit of Georgian citizens.

“The Strong Georgia-Lelo political coalition and other political actors from Georgia approached the OSCE a year ago and requested an investigation into the political injustice and human rights situation that Ivanishvili has created in this country. This is one of the most important mechanisms in the world where facts and objective realities are established impartially regarding what is happening in a state concerning human rights and politics. This will be followed by appropriate assessments or recommendations, which will be a factual exposure of Bidzina Ivanishvili in the form of a conclusion.

Twenty-four states are interested in the human rights situation in Georgia, and this will be a very significant event in our country. We were the initiators of this, together with other colleagues. I am confident that this approach will prove successful for the benefit of Georgian citizens. Furthermore, Bidzina Ivanishvili will gain a clear understanding of how authoritarian his regime has become, recognise his deep culpability in systematic and widespread human rights violations, and see how he is actively attempting to dismantle the political process in this country entirely. We are awaiting this with great interest and are very pleased that the path and method we used to create additional interest in the rights of Georgian citizens proved successful, which was supported by 24 states,” Kupradze noted.

According to Kupradze’s statement, the interest of 24 countries is most significant, and this means that 24 states, in a friendly manner and imbued with interest in Georgia’s fate and towards Georgian citizens, are expressing readiness for an expert group to come, become involved, and study the facts of human rights violations.

“Subsequently, to produce a comprehensive document that I can confidently assert will be quite challenging for Ivanishvili to read, as it will serve as an objective verdict against him, similar to the investigations conducted and published by other international organisations. I am convinced that Ivanishvili’s government will attempt to obstruct the work of this commission, and on the other hand, will seek to marginalise it, engage in propaganda, and claim that it bears no relevance to the truth,” stated Irakli Kupradze.

Representatives of four parties, Gia Baramidze, Political Secretary of the United National Movement, Giorgi Butikashvili, a member of the Coalition for Change, Teona Akubardia, a member of the Gakharia for Georgia party, and Levan Samushia, a member of Strong Georgia, held a briefing on December 19, 2024. They noted that they had jointly submitted a letter to OSCE/ODIHR, requesting the activation of the “Moscow Mechanism,” which involves deploying a special mission to Georgia.
