Georgia made history at the World Judo Championships in Budapest by defeating South Korea 4-1 in the mixed team final to claim their maiden world title.

Since the judo team championship has been held with mixed teams (three men, three women), Georgia’s team has won the championship for the first time (Georgian judokas had previously claimed bronze twice), breaking Japan’s seven consecutive title streak.

Georgia’s path to glory included a comprehensive 4-1 victory over China in the last 16, followed by a commanding 4-0 quarter-final win against Italy. Their most impressive result came in the semi-finals, where they stunned seven-time champions Japan 4-2 to reach the final.

The team’s success capped an outstanding championships for Georgia, who claimed four individual medals. Eter Liparteliani secured gold in the women’s 57kg division, while Tato Grigalashvili (81kg) and Guram Tushishvili (+100kg) both claimed silver. Luka Maisuradze added bronze in the men’s 90kg category.
