James Appathurai – We are glad to be platform to help Georgia implement peace initiative

“We are glad that we had received the detailed information about elements of the initiative and how NATO, as platform, can be used as communication means to implement the initiative,” James Appathurai, NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia told First Channel in an exclusive interview.

NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative talked about the discussed issues during NATO-Georgia Commission sitting where Ketevan Tsikhelashvili, State Minister for Reconciliation and Civil Equity talked about peace initiative of the Georgian government.

According to Appathurai, State Minister discussed the current situation across occupied regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, abduction of locals and violation of their human rights.

“The information, frankly speaking, was not encouraging but member states underlined that they appreciate Georgia’s efforts. NATO will always support Georgia’s territorial integrity and state sovereignty,” Appathurai said and added that NATO can held Georgia practically to implement the initiative.

The sitting of NATO-Georgia Commission on level of permanent representatives was held in Brussels, Belgium, on September 6.
