Georgian FM: Current Georgia-EU relations are unsatisfactory, but optimism remains for change

Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili discussed Georgia-EU relations during the Imedi LIVE program, highlighting significant shifts in recent dynamics.

“Our traditional partners, allies, and friends have become our foremost critics and, in some respects, standard-bearers for interference in Georgia’s internal affairs and exerting pressure. In this case, I am referring to our European partners. The reasons behind their actions are a separate topic, but I attribute this to heightened security challenges in our broader region—Europe. It seems certain fears are driving these intensified reactions from some partner countries toward Georgia. Despite this, Georgia is learning valuable lessons from these developments, which will be instrumental in normalizing relations in the future,” Maka Botchorishvili said.

She acknowledged that the current state of Georgia-EU relations is unfavourable.

“Today, the situation is not what we would like to be. None of us is satisfied with the current state of relations between Georgia and the European Union. However, we are deeply convinced that certain circumstances, as indicated by recent statements, may change soon, opening up entirely new opportunities,” the Minister added.
