Georgia marks 32 years since Battle of Gumista

On the 32nd anniversary of the Battle of Gumista, Georgia’s Deputy Minister of Defence, Grigol Giorgadze, and Deputy Commander of the Defence Forces, Chief of General Staff, Major General Joni Tatunashvili laid a wreath at the Heroes’ Square memorial to honour those who died fighting for Georgian unity. They also observed a moment of silence.

The Chairman of the Defence and Security Committee of the Georgian Parliament, the Director of the State Service for Veterans Affairs, the Chairman of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, veterans, and fighters were all present at Heroes’ Square.

The Battle of Gumista occurred on March 15-16, 1993, along the 8-kilometer (5.0-mile) banks of the Gumista River. The Shavnabada Battalion and the Sokhumi Military Police annihilated the opponent. Artillery played a critical role in the conflict. On March 16, the enemy began to flee, and Georgian forces captured Gumista.
