GD MP expects President could be impeached through parliamentary vote

“I, personally, expect and admit that President Salome Zourabichvili could be impeached through a parliamentary vote,” said Mikheil Sarjveladze, the Human Rights and Civic Integration Committee Chair, in Tavisupali Khedva (Free Vision) Program of the GPB’s First Channel.

Mikheil Sarjveladze explained that if the Constitutional Court confirmed the violation of the Constitution by the President, it would be hard to explain to society why vote down the impeachment no matter how oppositional or how loyal the legislators were to the President personally.

Sarjveladze said some opposition MPs could also vote in favour, but the government should respond and react adequately, disregarding the fear of not being able to gain enough support among the opposition lawmakers.

“We will clearly demonstrate to the voters and the international community that the rule of law is a key value for us, and we will not tolerate such principles of governance that are against the Constitution of Georgia,” he said.

Mikheil Sarjveladze further stated that even if the President was not impeached through the vote, but the Constitutional Court confirmed a violation of the Constitution, it would be “a serious responsibility even for the President.”

In response to the program host’s question about how to interpret statements like “it is not the government that deserves the candidate status, but the people,” Mikhail Sarjveladze stated that neither the ruling party nor individuals receive this status, but the country and such statements are not serious.
