GD Chair: We demand evidence for U.S. sanctions

The ruling Georgian Dream party Chair, Irakli Kobakhidze, on Friday, remarked on a number of topics, including the sanctioning of Georgian judges, Kezerashvili’s case, and UNM’s demand for the creation of the parliamentary investigation commission to look into the allegations of corruption in the judiciary.

For Kobakhidze, sanctioning four Georgian judges without any supporting evidence is “unacceptable,” while commenting on UNM’s demands for the resignation of judges looks “incorrect.”

As he pointed out, the US ambassador to Georgia, Kelly Degnan, “does not deem the Georgian society deserving of providing evidence for the sanctions.” “We demand evidence from her [Degnan] side, even though she remains silent.”

Alluding to the former Defence Minister and Formula TV founder Davit Kezerashvili, the GD Chair stated that “We demand justice from everyone, including certain European politicians who refer to Kezerashvili as a media owner in exile. This is very unacceptable to us.” He went on to say that Kezerashvili earned his money “through business racketeering, looting the army and now looting European pensioners.”

As for the UNM’s call for the creation of the legislative probe commission, the GD Chair asserted that the party has “a principled position – we back the principle of judicial independence and we stand in solidarity with Georgian judges.”

“Those political entities and their supporting experts, who did not enter the parliament for six months, are accusing us of acting against the Constitution. They have been correctly reminded that it is because of the Georgian Dream that they still have MP mandates. We continue acting under the Constitution and ensuring that the UNM is unable to form a commission, and we will also ensure that the parliament functions properly,” he added.
